Currently, there is an active outbreak of the severe Zaire Ebola strain in Kasai Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as of early September 2025, with at least 57 confirmed/probable cases and 35 deaths as of September 22, 2025. Although the outbreak is severe, its remote location in the DRC may limit its spread, keeping the risk of infection low in most other parts of the world.
